Creating a group within a course will allow you to:
- Filter activities and Grade book by group
- Access only the course participants relevant to a particular teacher or trainer
- Allocating resources or activities to particular groups
Step 1. Enter a course that you’d like to create a group within
Step 2. Select the COG icon in the top right hand corner of the course page
Step 3. From the drop down list, select More…
Step 4. Select the Users tab
Step 5. Locate the Users category
Step 6. Select Groups
Step 7. Select Create Group
Step 8. Set the parameters that you’d like this group to have

Group ID Number |
The ID number of group is only used when matching the group against external systems and is not displayed anywhere on the site If the group has an official code name it may be entered, otherwise the field can be left blank. |
Group Description |
Add a description. If a description is not required, this field can be left blank. |
Enrolment Key
Group Messaging |
An enrolment key enables access to the course to be restricted to only those who know the key. If a group enrolment key is specified, then not only will entering that key left the user into the course, but it will also automatically make them a member of this group. Note: Group enrolment keys must be enabled in the self-enrolment settings and an enrolment key for the course must also be specified. If enabled, group members can send messages to the others in their group via the messaging drawer. |
Hide Picture |
If you choose to add a picture, would you like it to be hidden or displayed. |
New Picture |
Select an image in JPG or PNG format. The image will be cropped to a square and resize to 100x100 pixels. |
The group has now been created and visible in the Groups field.
